ABSTRACT

David Hume, one of the most important philosophers of the Modern Period, is a radical and constantly referred thinker in this period due to his Empiricism and Skepticism and also his ethical view. Hume, who constitutes his ethical conception on an empirical ground and on the sentiments, defines main motivations of the moral action as desire, approval and acceptance. In this regard, being desired and being approved are the facts that are acquired from the object by the way of experience. This expression of moral good, which depends on experience, gives us both the behavioral and sentimental ground in the determination of moral responsibilities and principles and also presents us morality in a ground that is non-normative and away from metaphysics. This conception of Hume, which gets off the morality and the constitution of moral norms being the commands of accepted authorities, underlies the Naturalist Ethical view. This view, which deals the moral good as part of experience, desire, sentiment and sympathy and as an interaction of human being and her environment and also as a whole of attitutes and behaviors that arise as a result of this interaction, is adopted by naturalistic view of comtemporary philosophy and re-interpreted on the ground of Humean concepts. Naturalistic views, which presents moral action on the ground of the interaction of human being, as an evolutionary biological being, and nature by acting on Hume’s empirical ethical view, represent a different point of view to the contemporary ethical problems. In this respect, the aim of this study is to analyze and evaluate Humean reflections in contemporary naturalism within the frame of the concepts of experience, experimental ethics and sympathy.
