ABSTRACT

Interpretation of the democracy and the experience of crisis has become a critical debate in contemporary political philosophy. This paper sets out to read Patocka’s extensive analysis in the field of a phenomenological philosophy of history, which transforms Husserl’s theme of the crisis of European humanity in an ethico-political direction. We believe that Czech philosopher and political dissident Jan Patočka offers one of the most insightful analyses of the fundemental moral relationships between progress and decline, between the possibility of freedom and its undermining. It is within this larger context that his “heretical” concept of polemos also meets his argument for a “solidarity of the shaken”, which emphasizes the formation of a new community, a community-to-come.
